NCERT Class X Chapter 3: Pair of Linear Equations In Two Variables Exercise 3.2 Question 2
Question:
Solve 2x + 3y = 11 and 2x – 4y = – 24 and hence find the value of ‘m’ for which y = mx + 3. using substitution method
Given:
2x + 3y = 11 ---(1)2x – 4y = – 24 ---(2)
y = mx + 3 ---(3)
To Find:
The values of x and y, and the value of m.Formula:
Substitution methodSolution:
From equation (1), 2x = 11 - 3y ⇒ x =
11 - 3y
2
Substitute this value of x in equation (2):
2( 11 - 3y 2 ) – 4y = –24
11 - 3y -4y = -24
11 - 7y = -24
-7y = -35
y = 5
2( 11 - 3y 2 ) – 4y = –24
11 - 3y -4y = -24
11 - 7y = -24
-7y = -35
y = 5
Substitute y = 5 in equation (1):
2x + 3(5) = 11
2x + 15 = 11
2x = -4
x = -2
2x + 3(5) = 11
2x + 15 = 11
2x = -4
x = -2
Substitute x = -2 and y = 5 in equation (3):
5 = m(-2) + 3
5 = -2m + 3
2 = -2m
m = -1
5 = m(-2) + 3
5 = -2m + 3
2 = -2m
m = -1
Result:
x = -2, y = 5, m = -1Next question solution:
