NCERT Class X Chapter 5: Arithmetic Progression Exercise 5.1 Question 3 (i)
Question:
For the following APs, write the first term and the common difference: 3, 1, – 1, – 3, . . .
Given:
Arithmetic Progression (AP): 3, 1, -1, -3, ...
To Find:
First term (a) and common difference (d)
Formula:
In an AP, the common difference (d) is the difference between any two consecutive terms.
d = an - an-1
where an is the nth term and an-1 is the (n-1)th term.
Solution:
The first term (a) is the first number in the sequence.
a = 3
To find the common difference (d), subtract any two consecutive terms.
Let's subtract the second term from the first term:
d = 1 - 3 = -2
Result:
First term (a) = 3
Common difference (d) = -2
