NCERT Class X Chapter 5: Arithmetic Progression Exercise 5.1 Question 3 (ii)
Question:
For the following APs, write the first term and the common difference: – 5, – 1, 3, 7, . . .
Given:
Arithmetic Progression (AP): – 5, – 1, 3, 7, . . .
To Find:
First term (a) and common difference (d)
Formula:
Common difference (d) = a2 - a1 = a3 - a2 = ...
Solution:
First term (a) is the first number in the sequence.
⇒ a = – 5
Common difference (d) is the difference between consecutive terms.
⇒ d = a2 - a1 = –1 – (–5) = –1 + 5 = 4
Alternatively, d = a3 - a2 = 3 – (–1) = 3 + 1 = 4
Result:
First term (a) = – 5
Common difference (d) = 4
