NCERT Class X Chapter 5: Arithmetic Progression Exercise 5.2 Question 6
Question:
Check whether – 150 is a term of the AP : 11, 8, 5, 2 . . .
Given:
Arithmetic Progression (AP): 11, 8, 5, 2, ...
To Find:
Whether –150 is a term of the given AP.
Formula:
The nth term of an AP is given by: an = a + (n-1)d, where
a is the first term,
d is the common difference, and
n is the number of terms.
Solution:
First term (a) = 11
Common difference (d) = 8 - 11 = -3
Let –150 be the nth term of the AP. Then,
an = a + (n-1)d
–150 = 11 + (n-1)(-3)
–150 = 11 -3n + 3
–150 = 14 -3n
3n = 14 + 150
3n = 164
n = 164 3
n = 54.666...
Since n is not an integer, –150 is not a term of the given AP.
Result:
–150 is not a term of the AP.
