NCERT Class X Chapter 14: Probability Exercise 14.1 Question 3

Question:

Why is tossing a coin considered to be a fair way of deciding which team should get the ball at the beginning of a football game?

Given:

A coin with two sides: Heads (H) and Tails (T).

To Find:

Why a coin toss is a fair method to decide which team gets the ball first.

Formula:

Probability = Favorable Outcomes Total Outcomes

Solution:

A coin has two sides, Heads (H) and Tails (T).

When a coin is tossed, the probability of getting Heads is 1 2 and the probability of getting Tails is also 1 2 .

Since both probabilities are equal, each outcome (Heads or Tails) is equally likely.

Therefore, assigning one outcome to each team makes the decision fair, as both teams have an equal chance (50%) of winning the toss.

Result:

Tossing a coin is a fair way to decide which team gets the ball first because each team has an equal probability of winning the toss.
