NCERT Class X Chapter 14: Probability Exercise 14.1 Question 9
Question:
A box contains 5 red marbles, 8 white marbles and 4 green marbles. One marble is taken out of the box at random. What is the probability that the marble taken out will be
(i) red ?
(ii) white ?
(iii) not green?
Given:
Number of red marbles = 5
Number of white marbles = 8
Number of green marbles = 4
Total number of marbles = 5 + 8 + 4 = 17
To Find:
(i) Probability of drawing a red marble
(ii) Probability of drawing a white marble
(iii) Probability of drawing a marble that is not green
Formula:
Probability = Number of favorable outcomes Total number of outcomes
Solution:
(i) Probability of drawing a red marble = 5 17
(ii) Probability of drawing a white marble = 8 17
(iii) Probability of drawing a marble that is not green = 5 + 8 17 = 13 17
Result:
(i) Probability of drawing a red marble =
5
17
(ii) Probability of drawing a white marble =
8
17
(iii) Probability of drawing a marble that is not green =
13
17
