NCERT Class X Chapter 14: Probability Exercise 14.1 Question 16
Question:
12 defective pens are accidentally mixed with 132 good ones. It is not possible to just look at a pen and tell whether or not it is defective. One pen is taken out at random from this lot. Determine the probability that the pen taken out is a good one.
Given:
Number of defective pens = 12
Number of good pens = 132
Total number of pens = 12 + 132 = 144
To Find:
Probability of selecting a good pen
Formula:
Probability = Number of favorable outcomes Total number of possible outcomes
Solution:
Number of good pens = 132
Total number of pens = 144
Probability of selecting a good pen = 132 144
Simplifying the fraction by dividing both numerator and denominator by 12:
132 ÷ 12 144 ÷ 12 ⇒ 11 12
Result:
The probability that the pen taken out is a good one is 11 12 .
