NCERT Class X Chapter 14: Probability Exercise 14.1 Question 7

Question:

It is given that in a group of 3 students, the probability of 2 students not having the same birthday is 0.992. What is the probability that the 2 students have the same birthday?

Given:

Probability of 2 students not having the same birthday = 0.992

To Find:

Probability that 2 students have the same birthday

Formula:

P(A) + P(A') = 1, where P(A) is the probability of event A and P(A') is the probability of the complement of event A.

Solution:

Let A be the event that 2 students have the same birthday.

Let A' be the event that 2 students do not have the same birthday.

Given P(A') = 0.992

We know that P(A) + P(A') = 1

⇒ P(A) = 1 - P(A')

⇒ P(A) = 1 - 0.992

⇒ P(A) = 0.008

Result:

The probability that 2 students have the same birthday is 0.008
