NCERT Class X Chapter 14: Probability Exercise 14.1 Question 8
Question:
A bag contains 3 red balls and 5 black balls. A ball is drawn at random from the bag. What is the probability that the ball drawn is (i) red ? (ii) not red?
Given:
Number of red balls = 3
Number of black balls = 5
Total number of balls = 3 + 5 = 8
To Find:
(i) Probability of drawing a red ball
(ii) Probability of drawing a ball that is not red
Formula:
Probability = Number of favorable outcomes Total number of possible outcomes
Solution:
(i) Probability of drawing a red ball:
Number of favorable outcomes (red balls) = 3
Total number of possible outcomes (total balls) = 8
Probability (red) =
3
8
(ii) Probability of drawing a ball that is not red (i.e., black):
Number of favorable outcomes (black balls) = 5
Total number of possible outcomes (total balls) = 8
Probability (not red) =
5
8
Result:
(i) The probability of drawing a red ball is
3
8
(ii) The probability of drawing a ball that is not red is
5
8
