NCERT Class X Chapter 5: Arithmetic Progression Exercise 5.2 Question 1(iii)
Question:
Fill in the blanks in the following table, given that a is the first term, d the common difference and an the nth term of the AP: a=? d=-3 n=18 an=-5
Given:
d = -3, n = 18, an = -5
To Find:
The first term 'a'
Formula:
an = a + (n-1)d
Solution:
We are given that an = -5, d = -3, and n = 18.
Using the formula an = a + (n-1)d, we substitute the given values:
-5 = a + (18 - 1)(-3)
⇒ -5 = a + (17)(-3)
⇒ -5 = a - 51
⇒ a = -5 + 51
⇒ a = 46
Result:
Therefore, the first term a = 46
