NCERT Class X Chapter 5: Arithmetic Progression Exercise 5.2 Question 3(i)
Question:
In the following APs, find the missing terms in the boxes : 2, ?, 6
Given:
An Arithmetic Progression (AP) with first term a = 2 and third term a3 = 6.
To Find:
The missing second term of the AP.
Formula:
The nth term of an AP is given by an = a + (n-1)d, where
a is the first term and
d is the common difference.
Solution:
We have a = 2 and a3 = 6.
Using the formula an = a + (n-1)d, for n = 3, we get:
a3 = a + (3-1)d
⇒ 6 = 2 + 2d
Group terms on both side
⇒ 2d = 4
Divide by 2 on both sides
⇒ d = 2
Now, we find the second term (a2):
a2 = a + (2-1)d = 2 + 1(2) = 4
Result:
The missing term is 4. The AP is 2, 4, 6.
